Football is back! The Miami Dolphins will have the spotlight all to themselves when they play the New England Patriots on Sunday Night Football. How to Watch the Miami Dolphins vs. New England Patriots Game Tonight: Kickoff Time, Live Stream

The Miami Dolphins, led by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, meet the New England Patriots, led by quarterback Mac Jones, in a regular season game on Sunday, September 17, 2023 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.

Here’s what you need to know:

What: NFL, Week 2

Who: Miami Dolphins vs. New England Patriots

When: Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023

Where: Gillette Stadium

Time: 8:20 p.m.

Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been an enigma for Bill Belichick in his matchups with the Patriots.

Tagovailoa’s made four starts against the future Hall of Fame coach. Four times he’s walked away with a victory.

That track record is also exactly why Tagovailoa is expecting the unexpected from Belichick’s defense heading into his fifth meeting with New England.

“Coach Belichick has been coaching in this league for way longer than I think I’ve been alive. So he knows exactly what he’s looking at when he coaches his guys,” Tagovailoa said.

“Nothing new under the sun for that guy. So we’ve got to come out, we’ve got to be prepared. We understand that that’s a physical team and they’re going to make us earn everything that we can.”

The Patriots did that in Week 1 against the defending NFC champion Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts, holding them to just one offensive touchdown in Philadelphia’s narrow win.

Containing Miami may be even harder. The Dolphins enter with the league’s top-ranked offense following a comeback win over the Los Angeles Chargers in which Miami had 536 yards. It was the most yards for a team in a Week 1 game since Baltimore had 643 yards in 2019.

Tagovailoa was a catalyst in the Dolphins’ production, passing for 466 yards and three touchdowns — including a late go-ahead TD pass to Tyreek Hill — in their 36-34 victory over the Chargers. The performance earned him AFC offensive player of the week honors.

Belichick said Tagovailoa’s success has been a combination of melding his athleticism with the talent around him.

“He’s had tremendous production over the last couple of years, led the league in a lot of different categories passing the ball. So, they’ve got a really efficient guy running the offense,” Belichick said.

One of those players is Hill, who has accounted for six touchdowns in six total matchups against New England playing with Kansas City and Miami.

The task of defending him this week will partly fall to cornerback Jonathan Jones. He said the biggest challenge with Hill is that “he continues to get better,” finding new ways to release from defenders and gain separation. Then his speed takes over.

“Any play he can take a 3-yard pass and take it the distance,” Jones said.

Complicating matters for the Patriots is that this will also be the first time they have seen Tagovailoa since last season’s opener. He was sidelined with a late-season concussion and missed the second meeting between the teams.

Dolphins veteran left tackle Terron Armstead returned to practice Wednesday for the first time in nearly a month after he was injured during an August joint practice against Houston. He missed the opener with back, ankle and knee injuries but said he’s working on getting into playing shape.

The Miami Dolphins started the 2023 NFL regular season with a 36-34 road victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. Now heading into Week 2, the team is back on the road as they open their AFC East divisional schedule with a visit to the New England Patriots. Can Miami continue their hot start to the season, turn a Week 1 victory into a winning streak with a Week 2 win, and pick up an early win in the division?

The Dolphins lost to the Patriots in Week 17 last year, ending a streak of four-straight wins over New England. Miami will be looking to get back to their recent success against New England and protect quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s 4-0 record over the Patriots. Miami started Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback in the second game of the annual home-and-home series last year, then brought in Skylar Thompson; Tagovailoa was out of the game due to concussion issues.

Last week’s Patriots game featured the team putting themselves in an early 16-0 hole against the Philadelphia Eagles, then trying to make a comeback. Quarterback Mac Jones threw for 316 yards with three touchdowns and an interception during the game, while running backs Rhamondre Stevenson (12 carries, 25 yards) and Ezekiel Elliott (7, 29) were fairly well bottled up. Elliott also lost a fumble during the game.

The Dolphins are 1-0 after a thrilling 36-34 win last week at the Los Angeles Chargers. Tua Tagovailoa lit up the scoreboard with 466 yards and three touchdowns, while receiver Tyreek Hill racked up 215 yards and two TDs on 11 catches. Jaylen Waddle wasn't too bad either, hauling in four catches for 78 yards.

Pro Bowl tackle Terron Armstead missed the opener with a bevy of lower-body injuries but practiced throughout the week. Having him back would be a boon as the Dolphins look to protect Tua from Bill Belichick's defense.

The Patriots (0-1) fell behind early but nearly pulled off a Week 1 stunner against the Philadelphia Eagles. Quarterback Mac Jones had a strong start, throwing for 316 yards and three touchdowns, two to newcomer Kendrick Bourne.

In Week 1, the Dolphins had one of the more impressive wins. Miami was able to pull off the upset on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers. Tua Tagovailoa threw for 466 yards and three touchdowns while Tyreek Hill had 11 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns. The Dolphins' defense wasn't great, however, they played fine enough to pull off this win.

It was a round start for the Patriots as they went down 16-0 in the first half against the Eagles. The Patriots’ offense turned things around after the bad early turnovers. Mac Jones threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns. While it was a loss for the Patriots, they were impressive despite the early turnovers.
